Fundamentals~MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

What is it? A theory a psychological theory created by Abraham Maslow that discovered how human basic needs affect a person in order meeting needs at the bottom of the pyramid working upward.

When to use this theory? It is used to prioritize nursing care.

How is this used on tests? You will have to use this theory when asked questions when it is necessary to prioritize care. Que words are...most important, first, next,

Always choose the safest answer choice for your patient unless you are given an answer choice that puts the patient in a life or death situation.

For example lets say you are give three differnent patients who would you care for first?

1. A disoriented patient's yells HELP! multiple times then you hear the bed alarm in the background.
2. A  patient presses his call light c/o chest pain that feels like someone is squeezing their chest along with shortness of breath.
3. A  patient who told a nurse tech she does not want to live any longer.

Who would you care for first? #2 although the other two are important no. 2 is mid-myocardial infarction therefore needs your help right away.
