It is important to memorize certain things as a nursing student. This will help to reduce, anxiety and prevent cramming. It is especially helpful as a nursing student during clinical when you don't have the time to look up information.
You should commit these to memory forever...
- The Nursing Process: Assessment, Diagnosis, Implementation and Evaluation (ADPIE)
- Vital signs: Blood pressure, Temperature, Respiratory Rate, Pulse and Pain Scale. Also Pulse Oximetry (even thought is is not a vital sign)
- Diagnostics: MRI, X-Ray, CT scans, Biopsy, Ultrasound
- Labs: Blood cultures, electrolytes, creatinine, BUN, urinalysis, Hbg, Hct, WBC count, HCT, Platelets, PT, PTT, INR, ALT, AST, glucose levels and others
- Nursing skills: Transfer, Health Assessment, Urinary Catheter, Oxygenation, Tracheostomy care, Incentive Spirometer, 12 Lead EKG, Tube Feedings, Inserting Nasogastric tube, Enema, Ostomy care, Wound Care and Medication administration
- Common Medications and Administration: Medication Rights (Right patient, dose, drug, time, route, reason, assessment, documentation, evaluation, education and right to refuse)When to hold the medication, Dosage Calculation and Nursing Implications
- Medical Terminology and Abbreviations
- SBAR: You have to know how to respond to your instructors and preceptors when questions are asked about your patient
